I started blogging in 2014 (on Blogger) after we lost our first daughter. I wanted very badly to share as much information as possible with others about pregnancy and infant loss. I feel that by sharing and educating, we can save so many precious lives. This May (2017), I decided I wanted the capability to reach more people more professionally. Thus, my WordPress blog, Polkadots & Plaid, was born.
I have done a lot of self-teaching and research regarding how to create and build a beautiful blog. I have done the same regarding how to monetize and how to start making money with blogging (even if you are just starting out). I have read about many bloggers out there who are making $25K – $100K per month with their blogs. While this sounds great to me, (at least at this point) I also find it to be quite the lofty goal. In this post, I am going to share some simple tips to start making money with a new blog.
Here are some tips/tricks/ideas that have helped me thus far, even though I have really just started out on my professional blogging journey. These tips/tricks/ideas are simple and implementable pretty much from day one.
If you haven’t gotten your blog started, this post on how to Start a Blog and this post on how to Start a Blog in 15 Minutes guide you through the simple steps you can follow to start a blog using Siteground as your host. You can click the banner below to get started with SiteGround.
I know blogging takes a LOT of time and a LOT of work, so being able to do some small things that bring in even a very little bit of money has helped me feel like I am making some headway and that meeting long-term goals is more possible. I hope these tips and suggestions will do the same for you!
I now have a 2-year-old daughter and am currently pregnant with our second daughter after loss. This being said, my pregnancy is, of course, high-risk. So, I can’t really do much work outside of the home due to that, and the fact that we want me to stay at home with our daughter and new baby after she is born.
Daycare and other services cost so much and we want to raise our family, not strangers. So, I am a stay-at-home mom, working to find a way to help with the financial expenses any way I can. This includes looking for ways I can do some part-time work from home, AND of course, building my blog until it can be a substantial source of income for our family.
Raising a healthy, happy family is a full-time job. Around cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, bills, and everything else involved in keeping a home, there doesn’t seem to be much “free” time to spare. However, I believe with a LOT of hard work and effort, I will continue to see my blog grow and eventually become my families sole source of income. If others can do it, why can’t I? That being said, if other’s can do it, why can’t YOU? The plain and simple answer is, you CAN!
There are a ton of courses and eBooks available online from other bloggers regarding how to make money blogging. In fact, some bloggers make most or all of their money blogging by telling others how to make money blogging! LOL!
It can be difficult to know what resource(s) to use, especially when you are new and have a very small blogging budget if any. I purchased VictoriaPruett’s Make Money Blogging at any Level eBook not long ago. After coming across her site and reading about what she does I was impressed that she was sharing an eBook that had information about how to make money blogging for only $20.00.
Compared to many other eBooks and courses, this is a GREAT deal, and it contains so much useful information. I have not completely finished going through the book, and I have already been able to implement some of her tips to make more money and make my blog more professional-looking and user-friendly. I highly recommend this tool if you are a new blogger trying to step into making money with your blog. You will not be disappointed. Click the picture on the right to get your copy today!
If you are a mom looking into getting your blog up and running and monetizing, I highly recommend Suzi Whitford’s Blog by Number eBook. She packs a ton of great information in this eBook that will have you excited and ready to go!
Suzi describes in detail how to start out by deciding on a niche, name, and how to set up from square one. She helps you get from sort-of thinking you want to start a blog to up and running, social media help, post ideas, traffic generation ideas, how to make money, and MORE!
If you are on the verge of making the decision to start a blog, go ahead and invest in this great resource! You will NOT be disappointed. Click the picture on the left to get your copy today!
I started using Google AdSense for ads. After using them for a few months and making almost no money, I came across a great tip (thanks to the Make Money Blogging at any Level eBook) and got rid of AdSense. I then applied for Gourmet Ads (they started as a food advertising company, but now have all kinds of ads) and am SO VERY glad I did. I made 3 times as much from impressions in one month with Gourmet Ads than I did in 3 months with AdSense. This was a no-brainer. Gourmet Ads is a great place to start for new bloggers and seasoned bloggers alike.
Amazon Affiliates is a highly recommended and good place to start for affiliate links. Their program is very nice because you can link to pretty much any product that is out there and SO many people buy through Amazon these days.
There are so many other great affiliate programs to join. You can join to be an affiliate for a lot of great products including blogging resources like eBooks and courses, ad companies, hosting companies, etc… The list is pretty endless. I suggest that you get your hands on some great resources and/or products and try them out. If you like them and are willing to endorse them to your followers, by all means, sign up as an affiliate if they offer that option.
I am only an affiliate for products/services/resources that I use and highly recommend. This is my suggestion to you since you only want to offer what is best for your readers and in their best interest. You also want to gain and keep their trust. If you start offering anything and everything to them for sale, you will lose credibility.
For the most part, you need to grow your blog some before you can get sponsored posts. However, I was able to land a sponsored post within 5 months of starting my WordPress blog. It is not impossible by any means. I signed up for a free account with Shareasale. Then I applied for a few of their merchants based on what I believe to be good matches for my niche and for my readers.
I was actually contacted by one of the Shareasale merchants for my sponsored post, so that was an awesome start for my sponsored posts! There are many other ways to get sponsored posts if/when you grow your readers and can apply for other programs. I’ll dedicate a whole post to where you can go for sponsored post opportunities later. For now, it is best to grow your blog so that when you do apply for sponsored posts you can qualify for them.
I hope these tips will be a great starting point for you to monetize your new blog. Please let me know how you are doing. I would love to check out your blog and watch you grow!
