Start a WordPress Blog – A Simple Step by Step Guide
This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my Disclosure for more information.
I started a free blog on blogger.com not long after we lost our first daughter, Faith, in 2014. I thought it would be a good idea to start a blog about her as well as pregnancy/infant loss. While it was a great idea to blog about, there were (and still are) a lot of things I did not know about blogging professionally, or even how to start a blog.
One thing I have learned is that you need to have a self-hosted blog (WordPress is a great way to go – wordpress.org) to be viewed by companies as professional (which is important if you plan to monetize your blog). Owning your own site makes you in control so no one can delete your content randomly (I’ve read about it happening). It also gives you the opportunity to choose your own, personalized URL, which is VERY important if you want your blog to look professional. That being said, let’s move on to the fun stuff…how to start a blog!
I have read reviews on several different website hosting companies, and there are a lot of them out there. After looking around and doing some researching, I decided to go with SiteGround as my host. They have one of the highest website loading time, one of the most secure website hosting, and some of the best customer service when compared to 12 of the most popular web hosts in the affiliate market. All of their plans are also very affordable, even if you are just starting out. This being said, I have read a LOT of great reviews about Bluehost as well, so they would also be a great choice.
Sign Up for SiteGround or Bluehost
You can sign up for SiteGround here (or click on the first image below) or Bluehost by clicking the Bluehost photo below, for your website hosting.
Both SiteGround and Bluehost have a few different plans that you can choose from depending on your needs and budget. If you are just starting out (like me), you will really only need the basic StartUp plan for now. Here are the plans they have to choose from. Each plan is great, depending on where you are. You choose what you need!
Instructions for SiteGround Hosting Set-Up
Since I have my blog hosted through SiteGround, I will be giving step by step instructions on how to set it up through them. Although I know that going through Bluehost is simple as well.
- The StartUp plan is perfect for people with one website that are starting now
- The GrowBig plan is a great value for money offer, including the option for multiple websites and the SuperCacher that greatly improves a WordPress and Joomla website speed
- The GoGeek plan is perfect for people with e-commerce and larger sites, or more geeky development needs like staging and GIT integration
Choose or Use a Domain Name
The next step in getting your hosting setup is choosing a domain name. SiteGround has a FREE website transfer service if you already have a domain name purchased that you would like to use! Also, when you purchase your domain name through SiteGround you get that FREE for the first year, WIN!
Review and Complete Your Hosting Order
Unlike many other hosting providers, SiteGround’s advertised discount applies to any of the initial periods chosen during the sign-up process. This makes it great because you can sign up for their simple basic plan to start out with and you still get a great deal. It is not a requirement that you sign up for 3 years at a time to get the discount.
Once you click on the Pay Now button you are all done! It is as simple as that. Then you are directed to the cPanel, where you can download WordPress to get your blog started! WordPress is pretty user-friendly, although I have figured out quite a bit on my own as I have gone through trial and error. I would be happy to help in any way that I can with any questions you may have regarding WordPress, although, their forums and help are very helpful. There are also a LOT of great blogging facebook groups that are EXTREMELY helpful if you have questions!
I would love to hear from you if you start a blog from my instructions. Please reach out and let me know how you are doing. I can’t wait to see the amazing blogs you all create!
